Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah is deeply committed to addressing the cancer-related needs of our community through outreach and engagement activities, and in collaboration with community partners. We recently formalized our long-standing service to the 5-state Mountain West (Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Nevada) region by broadening our catchment area. As the only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region, we feel the responsibility to help all people across these states in the fight against cancer. To expand our leadership team, we are seeking a dynamic and innovative leader who conducts community-engaged research to serve as Senior Director for Community Outreach and Engagement (COE). Applications are encouraged from Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors leading successful, NIH-funded research programs in this area. We are looking for a highly motivated, collaborative investigator who is a leader in their own domain and coordinates an existing group of researchers active in COE activities. The position requires strong leadership and communication skills, an ability to work effectively with community partners, demonstrated experience in development of multidisciplinary teams and multi-stakeholder partnerships, and a broad vision on how to foster COE as an integral component of all aspects of the Cancer Center. The HCI Senior Director for Community Outreach and Engagement will report directly to the Executive Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center and to the Chief Clinical Officer at HCI and will have a key role in the development of HCI's strategic plan in addressing the needs of the catchment area. He/she/they will work closely with all HCI senior directors and clinical leaders, especially the Senior Director for Population Sciences, to ensure that we move the needle in our catchment area.

The new Senior Director will be appointed as a faculty member in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine. Founded in 1970, the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine is one of the oldest and most established family medicine departments in the country. Currently ranked #2 in NIH funding in the 2020 Blueridge Report, the department comprises four complimentary divisions: Public Health, Physician Assistant Studies, Family Medicine, and Occupational and Environmental Health. Faculty appointments and/or affiliations with other departments can be facilitated as needed. At HCI, the Senior Director for Community Outreach and Engagement will: 1) Lead and coordinate initiatives in HCI's area of service, the 5-State Mountain West (Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Nevada); 2) Advance and continue to develop HCI's strategic vision for COE; 3) Work closely with members of the Center for Health Outcomes and Population Equity ( HOPE), the program for Community Outreach and Prevention Education ( COPE); the Committee on Community Engagement; and other faculty and staff active in COE; 4) Interact regularly with our longstanding Community Advisory Board (33 members from the Mountain West) for bidirectional input; 5) Work closely with the Senior Director for Clinical Research on the implementation of clinical trials and screening across Mountain West partner institutions; 6) Work closely with other HCI Senior Directors and Disease Centers to advance interdisciplinary integration of COE in all domains of research and clinical care at HCI; and 7) Oversee comprehensive and continuous surveillance of catchment area cancer control needs through the HCI data integration platform.

The HCI 5-state Mountain West catchment area is comprised of unique and heterogeneous populations, including representations of numerous underserved populations: rural/frontier, Latinx, African American/Black, Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaska Native, LGBTQ+, and low socioeconomic status. The new Senior Director, COE will have an unprecedented opportunity to guide the expansion of the HCI catchment area and create a model for cancer control across broad geographic areas.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. It is desirable that the candidate will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: health equity, rural health, underserved and underrepresented populations, digital health/mHealth, cancer screening, community-based interventions, or implementation science.

HCI is an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network ( NCCN), supporting and fostering a vibrant cancer research enterprise in a highly collegial environment. HCI has an outstanding history of academic achievement and impact, a collaborative environment, and a commitment to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, training, community engagement, and service. HCI is a vigorous and growing Comprehensive Cancer Center, which scored in the “exceptional” range at its recent CCSG review. Part of the University of Utah, HCI includes over 230 cancer-focused research teams and has established outstanding programs in laboratory research, clinical cancer research, and cancer control and population sciences. Our integrated health system and HCI's participation in the ORIEN network of leading cancer centers provide opportunities for multidisciplinary collaborations in basic and translational laboratory-based cancer research, epidemiology, and biostatistics, as well as population-based studies of childhood, adolescent, and young adult cancers and outcomes. In addition, the University of Utah and HCI are home to superb shared resources, such as the Utah Population Database with more than 16 million records linking genealogies, health records, and vital statistics, as well as the Utah Cancer Registry which is a long-standing and preeminent SEER site. HCI and University of Utah Health provide access to state-of-the-art equipment and services through exceptional core facilities (see www.cores.utah.edu), including genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, a GMP-certified cell therapy and regenerative medicine facility, and a comprehensive biospecimen repository, which serve to enhance both discovery and translational science.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications: 1) PhD, MD, or equivalent with appropriate post-doctoral training; 2) Must have an established track record of scientific accomplishments with extramural peer-reviewed NIH funding; 3) Should have demonstrated administrative and leadership experience; 4) Must be eligible to work in the US.

Candidates should submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter containing a description of professional experience (including scientific accomplishments, leadership responsibilities and 3 references), and a 3-page research plan.
