Job Summary

The Pitt Biospecimen Core (PBC) is an institutional resource for collection, processing, and disbursement of human tissues dedicated to serving the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Faculty in meeting their research needs. PBC Labs are located at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Magee Women’s, UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Children’s Hospitals with a collection site at UPMC Passavant. The incumbent will be responsible for reviewing the Operating Room schedule to identify cases satisfying researcher requirements. Working closely with the Department of Pathology, the incumbent will collect, process, bank or distribute the human biological materials associated with the protocols in the area of responsibility. In addition, this position assists researchers by ordering clinical slides, requesting paraffin blocks, facilitating pathologist review of material and interacting with research histology. The research technician also works on assigned research projects outside of established collections. Processing may include but is not limited to gross dissection of solid tissues and processing of blood products and biofluids. Receive samples and fill requests for disbursement of specimens based on PBC client requests. Routine data entry and maintenance for the collection, receipt, and disbursement of each specimen. Excellent attention to detail is necessary to be successful in this position. Rotation at other PBC sites may be required. Gross pathology experience preferred but not required.
