Job Description Summary:
Instruct, supervise and evaluate nurse anesthesia students in provision of anesthesia services.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

Serve as Chair of the University of Kansas (KU) Medical Center's Nurse Anesthesia Education Department.
Serve as Program Administrator for the KU Medical Center's Nurse Anesthesia program.
Provide anesthesia patient care with clinical instruction for student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) at The University of Kansas Hospital (UKH).
Participate actively in the School of Health Professions leadership team.
Advise and mentor graduate students in their senior scholarly research projects.
Provide service to the department, school, university, and discipline at a level commensurate with the appointed rank.

Job Description:

Conditions of Employment
  • Hold active license(s) to practice and eligible for licensure in Kansas.
  • Maintain AHA (American Heart Association) ACLS/BLS/PALS certification


Required Qualifications
Education/Credentials:
  • Doctoral degree (PhD, DNAP, DNP or equivalent). The Doctoral degree must be from an institution of higher education that was accredited by an agency officially recognized by the US Secretary of Education to accredit institutions at the time the degree was conferred.
  • Current Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetist (NBCRNA) and Registered Nurse (RN).



Work Experience:
  • Experience in providing leadership to a program.
  • Experience in mentoring graduate students and faculty.
  • Excellent written communication as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience with teaching at the graduate and/or doctoral level.
  • Scholarship and clinical profiles as indicated by experience in nurse anesthesia clinical practice, scholarly projects, peer-reviewed publications, and/or external funding.
  • Record commensurate with the rank of Assistant Professor in the KU School of Health Professions.



Preferred Qualifications
Work Experience:
  • Record commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor.
  • Experience with personnel management.
  • Experience with fiscal and budget management.
  • Experience working with donors and/or charitable organizations.
  • Experience working in an academic medical and/or research center.
  • Successful prior experience leading professional accreditation of academic health care programs.
  • Scholarly activity demonstrated through disseminated presentations and peer-reviewed publications.



Skills
  • Record of leadership and service in academic, clinical, and professional settings.
  • Possess interpersonal skills that facilitate the growth and development of faculty, students, staff, and program.

Responsibilities and Expectations

This individual will provide strategic leadership for the Department of Nurse Anesthesia Education in alignment with university mission, will be a thoughtful steward of Department resources, and actively support professional growth of faculty.



Program Leadership and Administrator Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintaining all aspects of the Program within the standards established by the Standards of the COA (Council on Accreditation) of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs and the Kansas State Board of Nursing.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and professional awareness of environmental issues that may influence the program and nurse anesthesia practice.
  • Implements the evaluation plan for continuous self-assessment of the Program consistent with the Standards of the COA of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, to include the evaluation of the tools as established by the Program, on at least an annual basis.
  • Negotiates affiliation agreements with new clinical sites that have promise of educational excellence for graduate students in the program and the ability to provide anesthesia cases as required by the COA.
  • Communicates regularly with the Dean of SHP on issues related to the Program.
  • Prepares and administers a fiscally responsible program budget.
  • Participates as a Program Administrator within the guidelines set forth in the Kansas University Faculty Handbook and Program policies/procedures manual.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and professional awareness of environmental issues that may influence the program and nurse anesthesia practice by engaging in professional development.
  • Commits to effective leadership and mentoring of Department faculty, students, and office administrators.
  • Advances a culture of academic, clinical, and scholarly excellence.
  • Provides periodic review of the program regarding its compliance with the requirements of external agencies.
  • Ensures accurate record-keeping, data collection, and report submission required by the University and COA/NBCRNA.



Teaching/Scholarship Responsibilities
  • Supervises the activities of didactic faculty to include periodic review of students' evaluations, course syllabi, and examinations.
  • Oversees curriculum instruction of students in the academic setting, assuring the correlation of didactic learning to clinical nurse anesthesia practice.
  • Acts as a resource and role model to clinical/didactic faculty members in all matters relating to academic and clinical instruction.
  • Supervises and mentors' scholarly activities of Program students.
  • Directs and conducts student advising.


Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provides clinical anesthesia care with SRNA not to exceed one day per week
  • Accountable for the clinical implementation and operation of the Program.
  • Maintains standards of clinical performance in accordance with program objectives, professional standards of practice, regulatory, and accreditation agency standards.
  • Supervises and works with the clinical coordinators, faculty, and supervisors relating to the clinical instruction to maintain compliance of the program as outlined by the COA/NBCRNA
  • Assures visits to each clinical site as required by the COA.

  • Communicates regularly with pertinent Anesthesiology Departments on issues related to the Program.
  • Attends program and University committee meetings as needed and required.
  • Participates in faculty workshops and commencement exercises as required.
  • Develops engaging and collaborative institutional and community partnerships.
