Position overview
Position title: Kim Lab: Junior Research Specialist (Junior Specialist Rank)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Represented Specialist Series- Fiscal Year. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $51,300 - $54,600

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description


The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a junior research specialist. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Euiseok Kim, the junior research specialist will conduct research on a fully funded project developing next-generation viral genetic neural circuit tracers. This will involve conducting research on rodent stereotaxic surgery, histology, microscope imaging, and data analysis. Duties will also include cell culture assays, BSL-2 engineered virus production, molecular biology (cloning and PCR), fluorescent microscopy. The junior specialist will also contribute to research projects by maintaining basic lab reagents for molecular biology and histology, contributing to manuscripts, disseminating information through presentations, and assisting with grant proposals.

This position will require the candidate to prioritize accuracy, successfully collaborate with other lab members, and employ excellent problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and critical thinking skills. Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • B.S./B.A. degree or higher (or an equivalent foreign degree) in neuroscience; molecular, cell, and developmental biology; biochemistry; virology, or a related discipline.
  • Research experience in neuroscience or a related biomedical field.
  • Laboratory experience in small animal stereotaxic surgery, craniotomy, microinjection, and microscope imaging.
