Position overview
Position title: Academic Coordinators for the Center for Public Philosophy (AC II FY)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC Salary Scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the scale titled, Academic Coordinator Fiscal Year. “Off-scale salaries”, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. A reasonable estimate for this position is $19,585 - $23,580 (based on an annual rate of $78,342 - $94,318).

Percent time: 25%

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description


The Center for Public Philosophy (CPP) at Cowell College invites applications for two part-time academic coordinators. The two selected candidates will work together to address the administration of the program and their level of involvement will be proportionate to their appointment percentage.

Under the direction of the Cowell College Provost, the incumbents will independently lead and implement a variety of CPP’s activities, including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Direct various ethics bowls by collaborating with educators at other colleges and high schools in Northern California and possibly elsewhere in California and other states, in addition to collaborating with staff at other departments and divisions across UCSC.
  • Serve on leadership committees that oversee National High School Ethics Bowl activities.
  • Co-facilitate the San Quentin Ethics Bowl program (in collaboration with the Mt. Tamalpais College).
  • Direct the Philosophy for Children program at six elementary, middle, and high schools in Santa Cruz County.
  • Serve on the Philosophy Learning and Teaching Organization committees.
  • Research and write grants to support funding for the CPP.
  • Pursue funding from potential donors, often using CPP's new TEQ Deck.
  • Support the initial stages of an Ethics Bowl in Silicon Valley on technology, soliciting participation of tech companies and professionals.
  • Adjudicate all requests for collaboration from individuals and units (on and off campus units) and oversee that collaboration.
  • Serve as the CPP contact person with staff at Cowell College for financial administration and reporting.
  • Develop and direct social media strategy for the CPP and the CPP blog.
  • Organize CPP's major annual event at UCSC's Institute of Arts and Science.
  • Partner with Slug Society to a produce short film on the Crossing Borders event.
  • Develop and direct monthly brown-bag colloquium for graduate students and faculty.
  • Develop and direct a podcast in collaboration with radios KSQD and KZSC.
  • Provide general support to other public philosophy events sponsored by the CPP.
  • Serve as a panelist and co-chair for the annual Public Philosophy Network Conference.
  • Hire and supervise student interns.

Applicants with one or more of the following areas of experience are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Expertise in public philosophy and ethics programs.
  • Demonstrated record of innovation and leadership.
  • Experience with public philosophy at an institution of higher education, and a meaningful familiarity with the Ethics Bowl.

The campus is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their assigned duties.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • A Ph.D. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in philosophy, ethics, or a field relevant to the advertised position.
  • Experience with leading at least one public philosophy initiative that engaged or reached large numbers (e.g., 100+ people).
  • Experience teaching courses in philosophy and ethics.
