Overview

Princeton University Library is looking for a motivated individual to be part of the Stack Maintenance & Paging Services Team located in Firestone Library. The primary duty of the Library Office Assistant II is to re-shelve library materials according to the Library of Congress classification system and to maintain the materials in the library collection in a neat and orderly fashion.

This position reports to the Supervisor of the Shelving and Annex Unit, working within a team of six other employees. Consistent high production, attention to detail and ability to multi-task are essential elements of the position.

The hours for this position are Monday - Friday 7am - 3:00pm, though individuals may be asked to work a different schedule on an occasional or temporary basis.



Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily floor pick-ups, collecting items which have been used within the library from book carts and tables. Scanning each item into Alma, the library management system.
  • Sort book trucks with returned and new materials arranging books in their proper order on carts.
  • Shelve books in assigned areas making sure the books on the shelves are in their proper sequence and that the shelves are neat and orderly.
  • Perform weekly checks in assigned lockers and/or desks in graduate study rooms for library materials out of place.
  • Shelf read assigned areas to ensure proper order on shelves.
  • When needed work as a group to shift sections of books to alleviate space problems
  • Aid patrons in navigating the library. Refer patrons needing additional assistance to the appropriate desk.


Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Basic math skill (Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide without aid of a calculator.)
  • Ability to sort efficiently in alphabetic and numeric order, and to develop a working understanding of the Library of Congress classification system of library materials arrangement.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions from supervisor, verbally and in written form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills (Familiarity with email and Microsoft Windows Operating Systems. Ability to learn library’s automated system)
  • Physical requirements: Bending/twisting, reaching. Climbing: ascending and descending short footstool. Handling: picking up and shelving materials. repetitive lifting of books up to 10 lbs. Pushing and pulling: fully loaded book trucks weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels. Standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and crouching. MUST PASS a Physical Capacity Test

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior library experience
  • Knowledge of the Library of Congress classification system or equivalent
