Description

The Center for Genomics and Systems Biology (CGSB) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is seeking to appoint a full-time Post-Doctoral Associate in the Interdisciplinary Collaboration Program under the supervision of Dr. Aashish Jha.

Overview of the department and position Accountabilities:

The human gastrointestinal (GI) tract is densely populated by diverse bacteria and can have a huge impact on health. The majority of research utilizes sequencing of stool bacteria to assess microbial constituents of the microbiome gut. This approach has a number of limitations. The GI microbiome is quite heterogeneous and varies significantly across the GI tract (GIT). Certain bacteria are more abundant in specific segments (e.g. small vs large intestine). Few techniques, other than endoscopic biopsy or postmortem histology, exist to interrogate bacteria in a specific region in the gut. Through this work, we aim to develop a new class of ingestible devices for sampling the microbiome along the length of the GIT, with a particular focus on particular microbes that are not well represented in stool samples.

The successful applicant should be able to independently drive these projects forward by collaborating with an international team of researchers. Primary responsibilities will include generating and analyzing metagenomics data, metabolomics, and single cell sequencing data to understand the spatial variation in gut microbiome. Candidates must have strong written and oral presentation skills demonstrated by previous publications and conference talks.

NYUAD offers a stimulating research environment, a distinguished community of outstanding researchers and is enhanced by state-of-the-art research facilities that are institutionally supported. We are dedicated to being inclusive and welcome all backgrounds and life experiences. The terms of employment include a highly competitive salary, housing allowance, and other benefits.

This position is available from September 1, 2024, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter describing both managerial and scientific experience specifically relevant to the work of our laboratory, curriculum vitae including a complete list of publications, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, a transcript of degree, and contact information for 3 academic references all in PDF format. Questions regarding specifics for this position may be directed to Aashish Jha at jhaar@nyu.edu
