The City of North Platte is seeking letters of interest from qualified firms, and/or individuals, to provide services as the North Platte City Engineer.

The City of North Platte is a community of around 26, 000 people, has a Mayor/Council form of government and has been served for the last number of years by a part time consultant engineer. Due to an upcoming retirement, we are seeking letters of interest from firms, and /or individuals, to fulfill the duties created by this upcoming vacancy. The City is asking that interested firms, and/or individuals, submit letters of interest outlining their interest in serving as the City Engineer. In the letter of interest please include resumes, examples of municipal experience and any other information that would be informative for those persons who would be working with the City. These letters of interest will then be reviewed by the Mayor, and a committee of City Council members in order to select candidates who, based on qualifications, will then be interviewed by the Mayor, and a committee of the City Council members. The Mayor would then present his recommendation to the full City Council for their consideration and approval.

Letters of interest should be mailed to the attention of the Mayor at City Hall, 211 West Third Street, North Platte, Nebraska 69101. Interviews will be set up with those firms, and/or individuals, after review of the letters of interest. Please respond by January 10th, 2020 to be considered for this position.


Under administrative direction of the City Administrator, supervises the Engineering Department and serves as chief engineer in the design and construction of streets, utilities, sewers, structures and other public facilities; serves as technical adviser to the City Administrator, Mayor, City Council and to other departments.


Plans, supervises and participates in the design and preparation of plans and specification for public works improvements including streets, water mains, storm and sanitary sewers, curbs, gutters, drainage facilities, building maintenance projects, bridges, viaducts and related appurtenances.

Supervises and participates in the inspection of public works construction and is responsible for the plans, specifications and contracts for public works capital improvement projects; establishes streets and sewer grades; supervises the maintenance of city maps and engineering records.

Reviews and processes subdivision proposals and maps for conformance to established standards; prepares cost estimates of public works projects; meets with developers, contractors and other local and state agencies.

Submits proposals and advice on particular projects or long range planning to the Mayor and City Council, City Administrator and other departments; supervises Engineering staff.

Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.


 Extensive knowledge of civil engineering and municipal public works administration.

Ability to plan, coordinate and schedule engineering and construction projects efficiently and effectively.

Ability to determine the most cost-effective design of public works projects.

Ability to enforce subdivision controls in a responsible and equitable manner.

Capable of motivating employees to improve levels of knowledge and productivity.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, contractors, developers, other engineers, city personnel and the public.


A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required; a minimum of five years of experience in engineering and public works administration required; a minimum of two years experience in an administrative supervisory capacity required.  A master’s degree in engineering, public administration or business administration preferred.


Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Nebraska or ability to attain through reciprocity within six months of appointment.
