Description
Under general supervision, performs skilled work in surveying vehicular and pedestrian traffic movement using counting, classifying, and monitoring equipment and by collecting traffic data integral to highway planning or traffic engineering studies. Coordinates work assignments with school officials, maintenance workers, and local law enforcement officials. Performs work assignments at various field locations including high accident locations and on open or congested highways and other roadways within the State; performs related work as assigned.

Examples of Work
Distributes traffic counters, sets parameters, and measures/collects and records data manually or retrieves via automated equipment; makes visual traffic classifications and other counts.
Inspects and determines malfunctions and performs necessary maintenance on traffic counters and other survey equipment; submits requisitions for and maintains inventory of parts and supplies for traffic survey equipment.
Conducts radar speed studies, manual counting of vehicle volumes, school crossing studies, parking studies, and vehicle-type classification studies.
Examines field data for accuracy and validity; prepares, codes, and enters field data for processing; prepares and maintains necessary records and reports.
Operates State-owned vehicles to locate survey sites, place equipment, and perform assigned work.
Makes speed test runs of curves and other segments of highway, as directed.
Confers with the supervisor and coworkers to discuss work processes, incidents, and progress and to receive advice and instruction.
Assists other traffic collectors during special studies and, as needed, other agency employees during adverse weather conditions and unusual circumstances.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: Coursework, training or experience in collecting and recording data.
Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.
PREFERRED: A Class B CDL with Tanker Endorsement or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment. Required training and costs associated with obtaining the CDL will be paid for by the Department.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: the capabilities, operation, and maintenance of traffic counters and other assigned monitoring/recording equipment; methods used in field studies, such as radar speed studies, school crossing studies, parking studies, and manual counting of vehicle volume; vehicle types; techniques to prepare field data for computer processing; agency manuals and traffic related state and local regulations; agency safety precaution policies and practices.
Skill in: operating a motor vehicle in the performance of speed test runs on curves and other segments of highway.
Ability to: communicate with others in person and by email, radio, and other instruments; collect, compile, and record statistical information; use maps and other reference material to locate installation sites; install various traffic monitoring devices using agency maps and necessary tools and equipment; use personal computers or terminals using software such as word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and email applications; use basic arithmetical calculations; compile and identify trends and deficiencies in data collected.
