Description
To formulate and direct policies to provide a safe and healthful atmosphere within the workplace and to comply with all federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and/or Experience:
o Monitors professional literature and attends seminars to stay current with governmental compliance requirements.
o Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, environmental science, or related subject; or 5 years of management experience in the field.
o Master's degree or a professional designation like OHST, ASP, or CSP is desirable.
Skills/Abilities:
o Excellent skills in written and oral communication.
o Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office experience.
o Ability to drive and inspect both outdoor and indoor areas to observe compliance with established programs.
o Attentive to detail and accurate.
o Well organized.
o Cooperative and willing to assist others.
o Able to use computer applications, office equipment, and telephone.
Mathematical Skills:
o Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
o Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Language Skills:
o Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
o Ability to write complex reports and correspondence.
o Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Reasoning Ability:
o Ability to solve practical problems with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
o Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
o Current Drivers License.
o OHST, ASP or CSP recommended.

The employee is frequently required to use hand to finger, handle or feel; to reach with hands and arms; and taste and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Additional Information
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
o Provide strong leadership. Leads the safety effort to comply with all DOT, EPA and OSHA regulations.
o Maintain a high level of ethics.
o Evaluates hazards within the facility for safety and environmental risks.
o Develops safety procedures and programs for all departments and monitors safety compliance to reduce risks.
o Recommends disciplinary action as needed.
o Develops safety training plans for validation of processes and procedures.
o Maintains contingency plans, including fire prevention, and procedures for controlling hazardous spills in accordance with government regulation and insurance company requirements.
o Supervises maintenance of material safety data sheets so they are accessible at all times according to regulations.
o Develops inspection policies and establishes regular inspection schedules.
o Supervises training sessions for emergency preparedness, confined spaces, electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection, and forklift safety.
o Maintains EPA records of hazardous waste, air emission permitting, and water pollution discharge, as well as industrial health monitoring and records of employee hazard exposure according to OSHA regulations.
o Reports to safety committee on the performance of the safety management system and any needs for improvement.
o Lead contact for Regulatory Agency inspectors; reports audit results to management.
o Investigates all in-plant, vehicular and property damage accidents. Prepares all accident reports.
o Maintains employee safety training records.
