Position Summary:
The Coordinator of the Success at Southern/TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program is responsible for the administration of the TRIO Student Support Services program which is primarily funded by a US Department of Education grant. The mission of the Success at Southern/TRIO-SSS program is to increase the college retention and graduation rates of eligible participants (low income or first generation students or students with disabilities who have academic need). The program serves 190-195 eligible students each year and provides a variety of services to assist eligible participants in clarifying their goals, succeeding academically in their chosen program of study, and graduating with a bachelor's degree in a timely manner. The Coordinator has responsibility for the Student Support Services program, including overseeing budgeting and accounting; hiring and supervision of personnel; coordinating the recruitment and selection of the participants; implementing programming; evaluating and achieving program objectives according to federal guidelines and regulations; maintaining participant and program records; and meeting all University and Federal reporting requirements. In addition, it is the responsibility of the Coordinator to foster an institutional climate that is supportive of students who meet the Student Support Services eligibility requirements. The Coordinator is therefore responsible for communicating with other programs and departments on campus to ensure comprehensive and integrated service delivery to participants.
Position contingent upon continued grant funding.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Counseling, Public Administration, Student Affairs, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of four years of experience with federal TRIO Programs, academic support programs, or similar programs for disadvantaged college students
- Minimum of three years of experience in staff supervision; budget management; program development and evaluation; reporting and compliance with federal regulations.
Preferred Qualification:
- Terminal degree in Educational Leadership, Counseling, Public Administration, Student Affairs, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those faced by SSS participants. •Prefer experience with programs involving peer tutoring, service learning, or mentoring. •Experience with Federal grant programs, particularly TRIO.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills; ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist.
- Ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines.
- Ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information. Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
- Initiative in independently planning, organizing, and performing work assignments within broadly defined parameters.
- Ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, online systems, social media platforms, Internet as well as online calendaring, email and other educational software.
- Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
- Working knowledge, or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies and procedures.
- Commitment and ability to providing students with the information, skills, confidence, and assistance necessary to complete a post-secondary education.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively one-on-one, in small groups, and in a classroom, workshop or presentation settings.
- Knowledge of mandated 1/3-2/3 rule laid down as part of grant requirements and the national definition.
- Knowledge of legislative guidelines laid out in CFR 646e
- Ability to adhere to and understand the regulation laid out in OMB A21 for allowable and unallowable costs.
- Ability to certify applications as per federal ruling
- Ability to follow guidelines and rules dictated by Federal Government
- Knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior. Ability to successfully interact with a diverse student population and to assess student needs. One-on-one and group advising skills.
- Proven ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, policies, practices, procedures, and activities of Success at Southern/Trio program. Proven ability to gather and analyze data; ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Highly developed critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain accurate, complete and concise documentation, records and files.
- Demonstrated professional or personal experience in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting Project Participants.• Demonstrated ability in programming that promotes the annual persistence of SSS Eligible Students from one academic year to the next;• Demonstrated ability and/or work experience in programming that improves the annual academic standing rates of SSS Eligible Students;• Demonstrated ability and/or work experience promoting college graduation rates for SSS Eligible Students.• Demonstrated ability and/or work experience in Effective Student Advising specifically in the areas of guiding SSS Eligible Students with goal setting,time management, self-advocacy, and study skills.• Ability to administer and manage educational opportunity related programs.• Knowledge of academic advising services, development of individualized service plans; and college, career, financial aid, and economic literacy services, and programming for Disabled Eligible Students.
