Senior Accountant
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Under general direction of the Director of Finance, assists with the implementation and administration of all accounting functions of the City of North Platte. Performs accounting work and a variety of other technical tasks relative to financial reporting for the City. Exercises supervision over accounting staff.
DUTIES-EXAMPLES OF WORK
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Assists the Director of Finance with the City’s accounting program in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles as defined by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to include proper accounting of all municipal funds; helps develop and implement approved policies, plans and programs for the financial, accounting and record keeping functions; prepares financial statements; maintains and reconciles a variety of ledgers and accounts and makes journal entries; examines accounting transactions to ensure accuracy; supervises and reviews the work of certain accounting staff; recommends and reviews processes to improve internal controls; develops and establishes controls necessary to assure the accuracy and security of all records and funds; notes variances from approved or authorized practice and initiates action to insure established controls are maintained; ensures that all City departments comply with established accounting procedures and policies; assists with the annual audit of the City; assists with the City’s annual budget process; prepares a variety of State, Federal and other reports on financial and accounting operations; insures accuracy, completeness and timeliness of financial reports, records and related documents; provides information to management; maintains property records, general ledger capital accounts and depreciation records for all City assets; prepares work order final reports; assists with the research and implementation of new accounting software, emerging issues, GASB and budgeting; provides accounting and technical support to other City departments; initiates actions to improve work efficiency and cost effective operations.
OTHER DUTIES: Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Thorough knowledge of the approved principles and standard practices of fund, accrual and cost accounting, purchasing, budgeting and other financial and accounting practices.
Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations.
Ability to prepare a variety of financial reports in a complete, accurate and timely manner.
Ability to analyze and interpret financial and accounting records.
Knowledge of modern office practices, standard office and computer equipment and financial software.
Ability to effectively supervise accounting staff.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and public.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain and exhibit discretion and integrity at all times when handling confidential information.
Ability to work independently and establish sound priorities on work assignments.
Ability to perform sedentary physical work and to lift and carry 10 pounds.
Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, twist, pick, pinch, push, pull and perform similar body movements.
Ability to talk and hear in person and by telephone; ability to see and read financial statements and other written materials.
Possesses hand/eye coordination adequate to use computer, adding machine and other office equipment.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
A Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or closely related field. Three years of increasingly responsible professional accounting experience, preferably in a municipal accounting environment. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant or the ability to obtain certification within eighteen months of hire is preferred.

Salary Range: $2,363.95 (bi-weekly) to $3,101.62 (bi-weekly)
