Advertising for this position is to establish an eligibility list for the purpose of filling current and potential future openings.
SUMMARY
This is a semi-skilled manual labor position requiring strength and endurance. While successful applicants may have the opportunity for future advancement, this is not an equipment operator or driver position. An employee in this class assists in the construction and maintenance of the County roads system.
Duties include, but are not limited to: shovel and spread shale and gravel, dig ditches, cut and burn brush, clean drainage pipes and ditches, perform potholing and patching, lay pipe, pick up roadside refuse and litter, help move and set bridge steel and flooring, paint bridges, assist in snow removal, spread abrasives, and perform related tasks and act as a helper to other more highly skilled workers.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent, ability to read and write in English, supplemented by six (6) months experience in general labor work.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid CDL Driver's License (minimum Class B) and eligibility to be insured under the County’s motor vehicle insurance policy. Must be able to pass the prescribed physical for this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of: hand tools and miscellaneous construction equipment, including use, care, and maintenance; and common safety practices. Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and willingness to learn to operate trucks and heavy equipment. Ability to perform manual tasks requiring physical strength and endurance and to lift and carry a minimum of 75-pound objects. (A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential tasks.)
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This is a bargaining unit position at an hourly rate of $19.58 with and a complete County benefits package including health and life insurance, paid leave, and pension.
